By Rachel Walton
Teacher in Ballard School New Milton and New Forest Chinese Academy

We've been using My 1st Chinese book series for more than three years. Most of our learners have gained excellent progress from the books, and been able to recognise and write characters in a short period of time.  Some of my learners have commented that they are surprised how quickly they are learning.

I totally agree with Penny about Chinese Treasure Chest - it's a real godsend for primary school teachers and is especially good for a Mandarin Club as it has lots of arty/crafty type activities as well as songs.

Chinese Treasure Chest Vol 1 & 2

Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:00:30 GMT

by Penny Lynch,
Teacher in South Wirral High School, Upton-by-Chester High School, St Brigid’s School Denbigh and Argoed High School in Flintshire.

I purchased the Chinese Treasure Chest published by Cengage Learning which was mentioned on the forum in the summer. I paid about £70 for 2 books of reproducible resources and I have to say, it's been worth every penny. There are songs, games, things to make and cultural activities - it's brilliant and has saved me hours and hours of preparation time. The activities are of varied levels, from Y1 - Y8. I have been using the older activities for Y7 & 8 but there are plenty of things for much younger pupils which I have not used yet.

Better Chinese

The Attention-grabbing pictures, the exciting content appeal to children’s curiosity. The CD ROM and the exercise books are an excellent range of teaching resources. They are an idea series for the young children to learn Chinese as a secondary language.

"My first chinese words is an exellent teaching material, it is very popular for children. They like the picture and the card games. The book is easy for both children and parents to read together. For teacher, the book plus other supplying sets, like Songs,Games, CD-Rom, makes the preparation much easier and it is a great pleasure to see students enjoying it as well as learning well. "

My First Chinese Words (reviewed by Mai Sim Merry)

Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:00:00 BST

By MaiSim Merry
Headteacher of Buckinghamshire Chinese School

I have been using the BetterChinese – My First Chinese Words series as our nursery class course curriculum for children ages between 5-7 years old since September 2007.

This series is designed for children who are learning Mandarin as a second language.  It is, therefore designed in both English and Mandarin with Hanyu pinyin(Chinese phonic system) . The pressure of written work is taken off as the emphasis of this series focuses on the children to learn to read first and at the end of the series, they should be able to read 250 characters and be able to hold some basic conversation.
