Better Chinese My First Chinese Reader

Friday, 26 November 2010 00:00:33 GMT

By Rachel Walton
Teacher in Ballard School New Milton and New Forest Chinese Academy

We've been using My 1st Chinese book series for more than three years. Most of our learners have gained excellent progress from the books, and been able to recognise and write characters in a short period of time.  Some of my learners have commented that they are surprised how quickly they are learning.

Little Chinese Board Books for Babies and Toddlers

Friday, 19 November 2010 22:11:01 GMT

Another series of fantastic Chinese board books for babies and toddlers! "Counting in Chinese", "Starting in Chinese Part 1" and "Starting in Chinese Part 2"

I met the author when I was visiting a Chinese school in London 3 years ago, she was one of the parent at the school and very enthusiastic about children learning Chinese. I remembered we discussed about the shortage of good quality Chinese books for young children learning Mandarin in this country.

by Ms A. Hickman

I totally agree with Penny about Chinese Treasure Chest - it's a real godsend for primary school teachers and is especially good for a Mandarin Club as it has lots of arty/crafty type activities as well as songs.

Chinese Treasure Chest Vol 1 & 2

Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:00:30 GMT

by Penny Lynch,
Teacher in South Wirral High School, Upton-by-Chester High School, St Brigid’s School Denbigh and Argoed High School in Flintshire.

I purchased the Chinese Treasure Chest published by Cengage Learning which was mentioned on the forum in the summer. I paid about £70 for 2 books of reproducible resources and I have to say, it's been worth every penny. There are songs, games, things to make and cultural activities - it's brilliant and has saved me hours and hours of preparation time. The activities are of varied levels, from Y1 - Y8. I have been using the older activities for Y7 & 8 but there are plenty of things for much younger pupils which I have not used yet.

Chinese Idioms for Children

Thursday, 18 November 2010 21:33:26 GMT

I have been searching Chinese idioms story books which suitable for my 7 years old. Many are too difficult for her to understand, I tried to read a few idioms books to her, but she couldn't understand most of the Chinese characters from the books and just couldn't bring up her interest. Two months ago, I received a set of Chinese Idioms books by Better Chinese, the books are for beginners to intermediate level. The sentences used in the books are very simple and easy to understand. There is also a summary of the story in English, vocabulary table and some questions and answers in the book.

Chinese reading books for very young children (Age 2 and above)

Wednesday, 17 November 2010 23:35:15 GMT

There are more parents sending their young children to learn Chinese. How to keep the children as young as 18 months interested in this new language is really a challenging job. Teachers play a big part, in my opinion, a happy and friendly teacher will make the job easier. At home, parents who are a non native speaker are encouraged to play some Chinese children songs or DVD to stimulate their brain. Let the toddlers familiar with the tone or perhaps some Chinese characters posters/flash cards with eye catching pictures on it. I found my 19 months baby tries to recite小白兔 (Little Rabbit poem) after a few months of "Little Rabbit" stimulation by me. It really works!

《守株待兔》的故事,一共有150多个字,他录了几遍,刚开始读得没头没脑的,还忘了怎么呼吸,后来读得通顺了,这一篇念得还可以,舌头刚开始有一点打结,不过大概可以得85分,值得鼓励。

《成语故事》动物篇和本领篇,这两本书,是我上星期在伦敦买的。这套书是Better Chinese的最新出版品,今年刚出版。

Better Chinese 有一套不错的中文教材,这套《成语故事》是辅助教材,中文(附拼音)写得简洁流畅,字句也是小孩可以掌握的。优点是,孩子学过一点中文后,可以自己朗读课文。每篇课文超过100个字,有点挑战,对初学者来说,长度适中。故事还附有英文翻译。

Promoting Chinese in Primary Schools

Friday, 2 October 2009 23:21:06 BST

By Mr Hua Yan - Hummersknott School & Language College

June 18, 2007 (Monday) Promoting Chinese in primary schools comes at a very opportune moment, as the National Languages Strategy for England urges every pupil in Key Stage 2 to have access to high quality language learning by 2010. Moreover, ‘Catching them young’ is in compliance with the language-acquisition theory, as current research suggests that the best time to study a new language is before the age of 12.

However, teachers must keep Chinese classes light-hearted to maintain children’s interest. We must ensure their first experience of Chinese learning is enjoyable. Otherwise we will lose them in Key Stage 3. Success in Chinese delivery can only be judged by pupils’ enjoyment and enthusiasm for the lesson.

In order to engage all pupils and develop enjoyment of their Chinese learning, we should bear in mind in our daily teaching what primary pupils want to learn and how they want to be taught.

My First Chinese Words (reviewed by Mai Sim Merry)

Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:00:00 BST

By MaiSim Merry
Headteacher of Buckinghamshire Chinese School

I have been using the BetterChinese – My First Chinese Words series as our nursery class course curriculum for children ages between 5-7 years old since September 2007.

This series is designed for children who are learning Mandarin as a second language.  It is, therefore designed in both English and Mandarin with Hanyu pinyin(Chinese phonic system) . The pressure of written work is taken off as the emphasis of this series focuses on the children to learn to read first and at the end of the series, they should be able to read 250 characters and be able to hold some basic conversation.
